Leveling The Expectations

Hopefully you’re here because you have some DIY experience and have the need and want to take on this project yourself. Honestly, it’s not that hard but does take some time and patience on your part. But if you do it right, you can save a bunch and have a beautiful kitchen in a relative short period of time.

It is absolutely easiest to just replace your old cabinets in the same configuration that they are already in. This will make it easy to swap them out size for size. You can always change it up a little while keeping the same footprint:

  1. Don’t like those cabinet doors on the base cabinets, replace them with some drawer bases

  2. Wish you had more room in your wall cabinets, replace them with something a bit taller. Just make sure you have some space to your ceiling for some trim or crown molding.

But if you’re like we were, this just wasn’t what we wanted. So if your’re planning for a BIGGER project, then be prepared for some big obstacle to overcome. Some of the things we faced with our remodel are below:

  1. Moving and adding in new electrical – we had to hire an electrician to do this as everything moved for us.

  2. Moving the plumbing – again, it was time to bring in a professional

  3. Flooring – putting a cabinet where one wasn’t or removing one where one was…do you have flooring under there, if you do or don’t have a plan to deal with that in your new layout

Buying and installing Ready to Assemble (RTA) cabinets is relatively easy, but there are somethings you need to consider to make the job easier:

  1. Are you reusing your current countertops, sinks, hardware, etc…

    1. If you are then measure those and use them in your design

    2. If you aren’t, then make sure you pick out what you want before hand, this makes sure that your sink will fit where you want it or that your new white marble countertop won’t blow your budget…
